The Quintessentially American Gold Coin - History

The ‘heads’ side of the American Eagle, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, depicts a woman with a torch and an olive branch, which represents freedom. In the background there is a sunrise spreading over the edifice of the Capital. The ‘tails’ side was designed by Miley Busiek. It depicts an eagle rising over a nest and holding an olive branch. The American Eagle was issued by the United States Mint for the first time in 1986.
