History of the silver Austrian coin

One of the best mints in the world – the Austrian Mint – released the Vienna Philharmonic in 1989. Before advent of the euro, the coin was issued in Austrian schyllings. The designer of the Vienna Philharmonic coin was Thomas Pesendorfer. On the ‘tails’ side of the coin he placed depictions of Austrian orchestral instruments - considered to be some of the best in the world. On the ‘heads’ side there is an effigy of the organ installed in Wiener Musikverein – which is the place where the famous Wiener Philharmoniker orchestra is based.
